How I Style My Short Hair

I recently chopped my hair the shortest it’s been since my senior year of high school and colored it more of a platinum blonde. I LOVE IT! It’s so fun and I love styling it.

My Hair Type:

My hair is naturally really curly. It’s pretty thin when straight or curled but thick and frizzy when naturally curly. My hair is on the dryer side and has little to no volume (except sometimes when it’s natural and has more of a frizz).

Step 1 // Shower

Sebastian Drench Shampoo | As I mentioned above, my hair is on the dry side. This shampoo is supposed to help drench your scalp + your hair. It also smells really good and was recommended by my hair stylist.

Pravana Purple Shampoo | This keeps my hair light and ashy. I use this in between my regular shampoo and conditioner since my hair is on the dryer side. I apply all over my hair and leave in for a few minutes while I shave or wash my body. The key is to let it set. The lighter you want your hair to be the longer you leave it in. This was also recommended AND is used by my stylist. I have also heard great reviews about this purple shampoo and I recently ran out of the one I normally use so I’m going to try it out.

Sebastian Drench Conditioner | This conditioner is true to a little going a long way! I put a small amount in my hand and then apply to the bottom half of my hair. Tip: do not apply conditioner to your roots. This keeps my hair SO soft and I personally don’t leave it on for long. I rinse almost immediately and do not use any leave- in conditioner.

Scalp Massaging Shampoo Brush | I don’t use this every wash but sometimes I do if my scalp is feeling sore from an updo or messy bun (or went a day too long without washing and need a good scrub).

Step 2 // Out of the Shower

Wet Brush | I have been using a wet brush for years. This is the perfect detangling brush and it doesn’t pull at all. I recently heard about this brush as well and it doesn’t have the little beads at the end of the bristles like a wet brush and is supposed to help stop hair pulling. I ordered one and can’t wait to try it out and see if the reviews are true.

Paul Mitchell Smoothing Super Skinny Serum | This is a product I put on my wet hair as a heat protectant. It smells SO good and also helps keep my hair feeling soft. I do two quick pumps in the palm of my hand, rub them together, and then apply. Just like my conditioner, I only apply this to the bottom half of my hair. I do this right before I blow dry it.

Step 3 // Dry

Conair Infinity Pro Hair Dryer | This hair dryer is intense. It gets hot quickly and stays very hot although you can adjust the heat settings. I have used it for so long that I don’t notice it but everyone points it out when they borrow it. My hair takes forever to dry because of the natural curly side of it. I have to go super slow and section by section.

Large Hair Clip | My mom always used a big hair clip while blow drying her hair so naturally, I do the same thing. I section off my hair in about 6 different sections going from bottom to top. Tip from hair stylist: always dry from bottom to top so that you aren’t putting dry hair on top of wet hair.

Step 4 // Style

I have been styling my curls with a straightener recently but I also use a curling iron. My hair has to be styled completely different on one side as opposed to the other. My left side is super flat, doesn’t hold, and is much thinner. Whereas, my right side holds super well no matter how much I run my fingers through it and has more volume because it’s the side most of my hair is on.

Everyone’s hair is different and I have watched many hair tutorials to master what techniques work for me. Right now, curling with my straightener has been my favorite look and it lasts a few days as long as I touch it up. Tip: Always curl away from your face in the front and then for shorter hair, alternate curling towards and away from your face in the back.

GHD Straightener | I LOVE this straightener. My hair stylist recommended it and it has been a game changer! It is a bit on the pricier side but it is so worth it in my opinion for what it’s done to my hair. I was using a chi before and every time I went into the salon my ends were so dead. Now, my ends are more healthy and honestly, it leaves my hair straighter as well. This straightener has a heat control to help avoid burning or damaging your hair. I also love that it shuts off on its own because this means I don’t have to worry about if I turned it off in the morning anymore!

Conair Infinity Pro Curling Iron | This was an impulse Target buy once before I ever even knew how to use a curling iron. I use a 1-1 1/2 inch barrel to create a more wavy curl. You can adjust the heat settings and it gets the job done. I’m still learning to master curling with a curling iron if I’m being honest but I still love this tool.

Nexus Finishing Spray | I use this mostly when I’ve curled my hair which is normally on day 2 or 3 because it holds better for me on dirtier hair. This spray helps to add volume and texture. I spray from about a foot under my hair and spray up into my hair, specifically my curls when I’ve curled it to add volume.

Day 3 – 4 Hair:

I can go longer in between washes now that my hair is lighter again. I had to wash every 2-3 days (MAX) when my hair was brown or balayage. Now I can go anywhere from 4-5 days without washing. I start applying dry shampoo around Day 3.

Nexus Dry Shampoo | This stuff smells so good and works like magic. I spray from about a foot away from my head, all over my roots before bed and brush it in. I let it set in overnight and then if I need to apply any more in the morning, I will but again I can go longer without grease due to my hair being lighter again so this helps.

That’s it! That’s every product I use and have used/swear by for years! I have been using every product listed (minus curling iron, dry shampoo, and finishing mist) for over 5 years. These are my tried and trues. I hope this was helpful and gave you some inspiration for your own hair! I truly do love my new style and feel so spunky and fresh every time I style it.

  1. I live the Wet brush. My grandchildren have naturally curly hair and the girl has long hair. With the Wet brush it brushes easily without pulling and hurting her. No tangles is a great thing for children.
