He Can Handle the Mess + Target Easter Dress Haul

This year as we approach Easter, I’ve been reflecting on what God wants to speak to me this year for this special day. Easter can become so routine, especially being on a church staff, that we forget the meaning of it. We can lose sight of what God wants to show us through the gospel message. That’s what it is, it’s a message – a story to be read or heard and then understood.

We did an activity with the human trafficking survivors I work with earlier this week where we wrote down all of our insecurities, sin, things that have been spoken over us, sin that others have done to us, etc on a mirror. Even if we don’t admit it, so often when we look in the mirror that’s what we see – the bad, ugly, unforgivable things that have happened in our lives. Then we smashed that mirror into pieces and glued them to a cross. This is to show the symbolism that we are broken people but Jesus died for all of those broken things in our lives and has made beauty out of it. He died so that we didn’t have to carry them any longer. I have done this activity before with small groups in the past but this time it spoke something different to me. I felt the Lord speaking over them as well as myself that He can handle the mess. Breaking the glass and dealing with hot glue is messy.

He can handle the mess. He can handle our mess. He can handle my mess. He can handle those ugly parts of myself that I try to hide. He can handle it when my life gets a little out of order and chaotic. He can handle when my life is a little less Instagram worthy. He can handle it when I snap at my spouse or make that snarky remark. He died for that sin. He died for the mess but he also died so that we wouldn’t have to live these messy lives anymore. He didn’t just die FOR the mess – He died so we could be mess-less.

So often we feel like life has to be hectic and messy and stressful. We live in this “hustle”-heavy world and it makes it really hard to get rid of the extra and the unnecessary. Be encouraged that the Lord has more for you this Easter but He can handle the broken, sharp, edgy parts of you as well. Happy Easter!
