Meet My People: Busayo Akindona

Incase you’re new here, or just forgot, I launched a series called Meet My People Mondays. Every other Monday you will get to hear from one of my closest friends. They will share about themselves, me, and our friendship. I truly believe there is no better way to know me than to know the people around me. They are going to be just as real and as honest as I am. I want you guys to get to know the people I love, while also getting to see me from one of my friend’s point of view.

Meet My People: Busayo Akindona

Busayo (also known as Buse) Akindona, I’ll never forget when I met her. It was my first night in the dorms at UNT and I went to a volleyball event for Chi Alpha. Busayo proceeded to give me, along with other freshman, advice on how to get things for free on campus and around town. It was hilarious and I immediately connected with her. Years later…I still think it describes her pretty well that that was her first conversation with me. Throughout the years, Busayo has become someone I can really lean on. She always has such wisdom from the Lord and she is a great listener! I love that we can have a super deep or spiritual conversation and then do something super weird or fun the next second. It’s the best kind of friendships to have. I can’t even begin to describe how thankful I was to have Busayo around during my college years, she really did keep my grounded. But the BEST part is that now that we’re older we get to help one another out, which is SO MUCH fun! She sang at my wedding, I’ve lead worship for her church while she was out of town, and in a few weeks she’s coming to help us with a worship night at youth! Busayo is the first person who really believed in me and my ability to lead worship. I have her to thank for pushing me out of my comfort zone and stepping into what God was calling me to. I recommend you surround yourself with friends like that! I could go on and on about all the great things about Busayo, but I’ll let her answers explain a little more! I love you so much Busayo and you’ll never understand the real impact you have made and continue to make on my life. Thanks for being a lifelong friend!

The way this will work is…I asked her a series of questions, some about her and some about me, and I copied them word for word into this document. All of my input, if any, will be italicized and in parentheses. This is how it will be for each person. So, let’s dive in:

My favorite season is the time of year when the Hallmark holiday movie list is released!

What are you reading right now?

Do subtitles count? (My friends and I started a book club so hopefully that will help me get started..)

What is something God’s been speaking to you right now?

It is okay to have thing not work out the way you hoped. Learn to trust that everything will be what God intends it to be. (SO GOOD!)

What was the best thing that happened to you this past year?

Helping plant a church in the North Fort Worth Area! If you need a place to belong and grow visit (shameless plug) (I’m down with your shameless plug, if you’re in the Fort Worth area..this church is amazing. I’ve lead worship with them a few times and pastor Marco is AWESOME!)

What’s your favorite animal? And why?

I don’t have one. I’m not an animal person… but I LOVE babies! Those are pretty much the same right?

I’m a financial advisor at an Auto finance company in Dallas, TX

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Leading worship, writing music, and still learning to love people well.

What was the best year of your life? And why?

This year! I have had many firsts. First ‘big girl’ job, first car, first apartment, first church plant. While it’s been a tough year, God’s been faithful and I see that!

 What are your strengths?

I am a good leader (at least I think so) (Busayo is a GREAT leader. She draws people in and people naturally want to follow her.)

Romans 8:23; it reminds that God loves me and nothing can change that…. That is pretty powerful if you ask me.

If you could share anything with the people on the blog what would you say?

Learn something new in every season wherever you are! Don’t get so caught up in where you’re not that you miss out on touching the people you’re meant to touch around you. (I am learning this currently and it’s hard to learn, but so life changing once you get it.)

How did you meet Courtney?

UNT Chi Alpha (I’m seeing a trend. It’s almost as if I’ve met all my closest friends at UNT Chi Alpha)

What was your first impression of her?

I distinctly remember being blow away by how loud and funny she was! She was exactly like me.

What’s your favorite thing about Courtney?

How has Courtney impacted your life?

She is that person that you can rely on to give you sound advice and she has been there for me when I needed her most! (Love ya!) (Love you MORE!)

If you could describe Courtney in one word, what would it be?

Which blog post has been your favorite so far? And why?

It is okay to not be okay! I think that is the biggest lesson that we all need to learn. I am still learning this myself. We do not always have to be okay. We are human. Even though finding people we can be vulnerable around is hard, it is necessary (Thanks Court for being that for me)

Share a memory or story of you and Courtney (one that you love, will make some laugh, or that you think people just HAVE to hear)

My favorite memory of Courtney is her wedding. Looking back at her while she walked down the aisle and seeing her cute face fill up with tears. I never cry at weddings, but Court’s was definitely my first. (I’m not crying…you’re crying. I had NO idea Buse cried at my takes a lot to make her cry. I am HONORED! haha)

Anything else you would like to say about yourself or Courtney:

Court is great and we can all agree. God’s hand on her life is fierce and I love that God made us meet! She is going to change the world and I can’t wait to see it!
